main character
Godric was born in 1198 in Glastonbury, England. His father, Alric, was one of the most honoured European knights, who played a significant role in the glorious Third Crusade. From the age of seven, Godric never stopped training in swordsmanship, learning the ethos of a European knight, of honour and of devotion to the Holy Roman Church. Following in his father's footsteps, he wanted to become one of Europe's most noble and respectable knights.
Godric's childhood ended suddenly when he was ten. One night a garrison of armed men invaded Alric's property and charged him with heresy. They demanded that Alric surrender and turn himself in to justice. Godric's father, indignant and surprised with this insolence, resisted. But the intruders overpowered him - Alric was murdered in front of his own son. That night left an indelible stamp in Godric's mind.
Over the next few years, Godric was raised by his uncle. Lonely, full of grief and aware of omnipresent injustice, Godric left England at the age of 18.
On his journey across Europe, he joined the Dominicans, wandering monks, dedicated to the Pope, preaching and converting the non-believers. He soon turned out to be an ideal companion for his monastic brothers – not only saving their lives when attacked by numerous bandits, but also displaying his oratorical and theological talents in the face of non-believers. The Dominicans decided to reveal their arcana to Godric, including their knowledge of the supernatural and their ways of resisting both spiritual and incarnate evil. Godric gained knowledge of exorcism and became a very unique knight.
During one of their journeys through Europe, Godric and the Dominicans reached Rome to meet one of the cardinals. He had a very important message for the monks – the Dominicans were given a historically significant task from the Pope himself. Wandering across a Europe immersed in religious wars, they should investigate heretic sects, find their leaders and convert them. If the enemies of the church would not repent, they would have to bring them to justice, hold a trial and punish the non-believers.
One of the Roman cardinals, who heard from the Dominicans about Godric's merits, skills and talents, insists on meeting him. He soon finds out that Godric could well be the perfect tool for certain specific, and highly secretive tasks that must be carried out to put an end to the religious wars in Europe. Godric thus becomes a member of the Inquisition. The year is 1219.
